The development of new photomultipliers, sensitive to the red part of the spectrum, has allowed the definition of the Johnson RI system, with the band and band, in the red and close infrared regions. Another system in the red region, based on the GaAs tube, is the Cousins RI system, with the and bands. The actual system is called Johnson–Cousins UBVRI system, combining the UBV section by Johnson and the RI section by Cousins. The complete Johnson system includes also the infrared photometric bands that will be discussed in Chap. 8. The transmission curves of the UBVRI system is reported in Fig. 6.3, left.
